ON INTERVIEWING THE LEGENDS
with RAY SHASHO
With the music scene rapidly changing into heavier album rock format FM radio, the band quickly shifted gears. They formed a new band called ‘Cradle’ which spotlighted the sensational vocalizations of Suzi and Nancy Quatro. Cradle became an incredible psychedelic/hard rock act that toured with groups like The Jefferson Airplane, Jeff Beck, Santana, Ten Years After, Traffic, Mountain, and numerous other bands. The band broke up in 1973.
Suzi Quatro’s vivacious performances in Cradle caught the attention of legendary British producer Mickie Most (The Animals, Herman’s Hermits, The Jeff Beck Group, Donovan, Hot Chocolate and Lulu). In 1971, Quatro moved to England permanently and signed onto Mosts’ label RAK Records. Her first single was called, “Rolling Stone” (#1 Hit in Portugal) and featured Peter Frampton (Humble Pie) on guitars, Micky Waller (Jeff Beck Group) on drums and Errol Brown (Hot Chocolate) on back-up vocals. After modest success from her debut single, Most brought in the songwriting and production team of Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. Quatro immediately hit the road on a UK tour supporting the bands Thin Lizzy and headliners Slade.
Suzi Quatro’s second single; “Can the Can” became a #1 Hit in Europe and Australia in 1973. Quatro followed with a string of hits, “48 Crash,” “Daytona Demon,” and “Devil Gate Drive.” Each sold over a million copies.
Quatro
supported Alice Cooper on his ‘Welcome to my Nightmare’ tour in 1975 but
couldn’t duplicate the notoriety she earned in the UK and Australia. But in
1979, Suzi scored big in the U.S. with the hit, “Stumblin’ In” (#4 Hit on
Billboard’s Hot100) a Chinn/ Chapman penned composition performed as a duet
with Chris Norman (Smokie).
Suzi Quatro became a household name in the U.S. as ‘Leather Tuscadero’ on the hit Television sitcom, ‘Happy Days.’ Leather was the leader of an all-girl band called, ‘Leather Tuscadero and the Suedes.’ Her sister in the series was ‘Pinky Tuscadero’ a former girlfriend of ‘The Fonz.’ Garry Marshall offered her an audition after seeing a picture of Suzi on his daughter’s bedroom wall.
In 2005, Quatro
was featured in a documentary film called, ‘Naked Under Leather’ illustrating
her life and much-esteemed career. Also that year she recorded a tribute song,
“Singing With Angels” dedicated to her lifetime idol Elvis Presley at Emerald
Studios in Nashville with Presley’s original backup singers The Jordanaires.
Quatro released her self-written autobiography, ‘Unzipped’ in 2007.
In 2010, Quatro was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends online Hall of Fame. Quatro released her fifteenth studio album, In the Spotlight in 2011.
Suzi’s most
recent release is entitled The Devil In Me, and she says it’s the best album in
my career to date!”
Suzi Quatro has
sold over 50-million records and helped pave the wave for generations of women
rockers. Some of the women inspired by Quatro are Joan Jett, The Runaways, Pat
Benatar and Deborah Harry to name just a few.
Let’s hope the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame realizes that too.
And just think … it all began when her father gave her a 1957 Fender Precision, her first bass guitar, which she still plays today.
In 2014 Suzi
celebrated 50 years as a professional and her famous quote says it all …

It’s got to be a very special release
that has Suzi Quatro announced proudly:
Is the
best album in my career to date!” After all, the American rock vocalist would
hardly utter such superlatives lightly.
Suzi’s enthusiasm for her latest
offering has many reasons, twelve of them to be precise. Because The Devil In
Meconsists of exactly a dozen songs, each of them – from the opening track and
title song to the final ‘Motor City Riders’ – a real highlight.
The reasons for Suzi’s remarkable creative explosion: on the one hand the
lockdown, which kept her from her usual touring life in spring 2020, and on the
other another collaboration with her son Richard Tuckey, which had already
worked out extremely well on her predecessor album No Control.
Suzi: “Starting spring 2020, almost one
hundred of my shows were cancelled and Richard would also have been on tour
with his band had not all concerts been cancelled or postponed. So, I said to
him: ‘We should make the most of our free time, write new material and allow
ourselves to be inspired by the things that are currently going on in the
world.’ I already knew that Richard and I make a brilliant team, after all No
Control had been a major success and a very special recording for us.
Although I would never have thought
that we’d be able to surpass it. But everybody who’s heard The Devil In Me and
all the people who had worked on the previous album have told us: ‘This album
is even stronger!’”
The album presents Suzi’s full range of
musical diversity plus a number of surprises. From rock tracks such as ‘The
Devil In Me’, ‘Get Outta Jail’, ‘Motorcity Riders’ and ‘Hey Queenie’ to fairly
unusual numbers such as the pub atmosphere-inspired ‘Loves Gone Bad’ with its
intimate mood or ‘In The Dark’ which is accompanied by elegant piano and
provocative saxophone sounds, Suzi presents herself from a whole range of
different aspects. “Richard wanted this album to have a through line, so that
you could put any track on, and it just fit… he also said he wanted this album
to be as important and groundbreaking as my first one. So that is how we
approached this project, and that is what we accomplished.”

The original memoir by glam rock
sensation Suzi Quatro, subject of feature documentary 'Suzi Q'
You've seen Suzi Q, the
feature documentary about legendary 70s rocker Suzi Quatro. Now read Unzipped,
the story of how Little Susie from Detroit grew up to become an international
superstar musician - as told by the glam rock sensation herself.
The glam rock icon behind such hits as 'Can the Can', 'Devil Gate Drive' and
'Your Mamma Won't Like Me' has sold over 50 million records worldwide and has
worked, partied and rocked out with legendary figures such as Noddy Holder,
Alice Cooper and Iggy Pop. Suzi Quatro's transformation from girl to glam
rocker was fuelled by huge talent, determination, hard work and a fabulous
sense of humour, but it wasn't easy.
In Unzipped, Quatro tells her story of life behind the scenes and
in the thick of it as one of the first major break-out female rock bassists.
Later, she went on to Hollywood to join the cast of Happy Days,
juggling her acting and music career with a turbulent personal life and
constant touring around the world. Through it all, she never lost her passion
to perform or her sense of adventure.
Suzi Quatro remembers it all in this brilliantly personal and funny book, a

THE ROCK STAR CHRONICLES
BOOK TRAILER
BOOK REVIEW
-By Literary Titan (5) STARS
The Rock Star Chronicles, by Ray Shasho, is a splendid book written by a music enthusiast who has poured their heart and soul into it. It’s a story of a boy who loved rock music, and his obsessive passion of it earned himself the name Rock Raymond. He went to school but instead was schooled in all matters of music while his peers were buried chin-deep in coursework. He then became a radio DJ and has now compiled a book on all interviews he held with Rock gods who raided the airwaves back in the 70s and 80s. It’s a compilation of interviews with outstanding vocalists, legendary guitarists and crazy drummers in the rock music scene. Each interview gives a reader an in-depth view into their personal lives and the philosophies that guide their lives which all serve to humanize these great icons. For readers who are old enough to call themselves baby boomers this book will bring old memories back to life. Millennials, on the other hand, may think of this book as a literal work of the Carpool Karaoke show.
The Rock Star Chronicles is a book I didn’t know I was waiting for. To come across a book that will talk me into trying something new. One brave enough to incite me to venture into new frontiers. This book made me a believer- I am now a bona fide Rock and Roll music fan.
Ray Shasho masterfully gets the interviewees talking. He smartly coaxes answers from them with crafty questions designed to get a story rolling out of them. The artists talk about diverse issues ranging from music, politics, and their social engagements. Having been on the music seen all his life, Ray Shasho knows the buttons to press, how to get them comfortable about talking about their lives.
The book’s cover is befitting of its subject matter with the leather look offering a royal background to the golden letter print. It speaks to how high a level rock music holds in the pecking order- arguably, modern music as we know it has originated from blues and rock music. The second noteworthy thing is the use of high-definition pictures to reference the musician being interviewed in every sub-chapter. This ensures that the book is for both original rock and roll lovers and aspiring new ones. Together is makes for a refreshing and consistently enjoyable read.
I recommend this book to rock music enthusiasts, aspiring musicians wondering what it takes and all readers curious to learn new things by going back in time.
